About Strong Moms, Strong Villages

Our Vision:
African American mothers who are vibrant and living abundantly with(in) a healthy, supportive village.

Our Mission:
To grow a movement that builds strong African American mothers and their families with an awareness and support for depression that is healed through their villages.

Who is the Village?
The village is made up of fathers, families, elders, grandparents, other mothers, health care providers, ministers, community based organizations, community organizers, government, policy makers, teachers, co-workers, neighbors, and YOU.

Goal of Campaign:
To reduce the stigma of maternal depression among African American mothers, give voice to mothers who are suffering and empower the village of support to cover the mothers impacted.

Why of the Campaign:
To enhance the work LIHF has established with raising the awareness of infant mortality, the next phase of the awareness campaign focuses on the link between maternal health and infant mortality; and in this case, maternal mental health among African American mothers and how it affects birth outcomes.

About LIHF

Wisconsin’s infant mortality rate remains one of the highest in the United States. To reduce that rate, the Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families (LIHF) is taking a new approach, based on community feedback over the past 18 months. As a result, we are focusing on chronic stress due to racism and social discrimination, a key driver of poor birth outcomes among African American mothers and babies.
OUR MISSION
We address inequities in African American birth outcomes in Southeastern Wisconsin through capacity building and facilitating systems change using innovative, community-driven asset and evidence-based strategies to improve healthcare and social support.

OUR VISION
We envision a state that supports all African American families’ ability to thrive.
